Freedom and Human Rights Organization revealed that in 2020, suicide rates rose across Iraq, which included the suicide cases of 644 people, having most of them happening in Baghdad, and most of these cases were because of poverty and financial struggles.
Out of the 644 suicides recorded in Iraq in 2020, 368 of them were female and 276 were male, announced Bryar Abdulrahman, director of the Iraqi Freedom and Human Rights Organization in a statement.
Bryar Abdulrahman also mentioned that 159 of them committed suicide using firearms and 319 hanged themselves, six cases were from falling from high altitude, 122 cases of self-immolation, 20 by poisoning, three cases by cutting nerves and eight other cases of self-drowning with two cases of electrocution.
Regarding the causes of suicide, Bryar Abdul Rahman, director of the Freedom and Human Rights Organization, said: "The most clear and prominent cause factors of this growth in suicide rates were financial, social and psychological factors, not mentioning the factors of poverty, aftermaths of war and other forms of warfare, and the deterioration of the human rights."
