Freedom and human rights organization in Kurdistan region-Iraq published a statement about the marriage between a 13-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man as exchange of five million dinars in loan, to the public, and here is its text …

After we were told on 27/11/2020 that a 13-year-old girl was given to a 42-year-old man in Harir district of Erbil governorate and the man has three other wives and children, and also that he got the 13-year-old girl instead of five million dinars which her father owed to him ..

After searching and collecting the information, it was revealed that the incident has truly happened and he wed with the girl on Friday and at the same time he completed the marriage ceremony and the marriage certificate in the court of Mosul.

This is the second occurrence of the same case in a week’s period, the first one was the marriage of a 14-year-old girl in Shangal in Erbil governorate with a 51-year-old man.

After we spoke to the relating families, we were able to cancel the marriage.

But the second marriage, although we provided the five million dinars the father owed for both sides to agree to abolish the marriage,

unfortunately, civilian Mahdi Nasir, who already made the 13-year-old his wife, refused to abolish the marriage.

We strongly condemn these kinds of acts and we will file a legal report against this action and we will not allow children to be victims of these people.

And we recognize the act as child sexual abuse which was done in the name of marriage and we completely reject it.

We ask the high court of the Kurdistan region to deal with the case in accordance with section two of article eight of 2011 on family violence which will give the guilty individual six months to three years of imprisonment.

We will not stop here and will continue to express our disagreement, and we will not allow people in high places to terminate the case or neglect it.

We won’t also hide that we have been under pressure since Friday night and even the employees and managers of human rights organization in Kurdistan region were directly threatened.

But we declare that these acts will not stop us and we will continue and expand our activities against human rights violations.

We call on the relevant authorities to take strict legal action against those who threaten activists and liberals and to punish them severely, and any party or official behind these actions should be compromised and be put out to the public.

We must all cooperate to achieve having a democratic country far from violence, and we know that this will not be done without sacrifice, and moral values must be restored to society, and a comprehensive law and a severe punishment must be imposed so that these actions do not become regular and do not increase.

We have put all our efforts into our work and activities and ask for your support.
